CEU Course Content

Sports Dry Needling System – Lower Extremity (SDNS LE)

Course Description:
Dry Needling for acute and subacute lower extremity conditions in athletic populations with multimodal combined approach with manual therapy and corrective exercise.

Course Objectives

Cognitive (Knowledge-Based) Objectives

1. Remembering/Understanding

  • Recall the anatomical structures, neurophysiological principles, and safety considerations for dry needling in acute/subacute lower extremity conditions.

  • Describe the evidence-based indications, contraindications, and precautions for dry needling in athletic populations.

2. Applying/Analyzing

  • Apply knowledge of trigger point referral patterns and motor dysfunction to select appropriate dry needling sites for common lower extremity conditions (e.g., hamstring strains, Achilles tendinopathy, patellofemoral pain).

  • Analyze case studies to determine when dry needling should be integrated with manual therapy and corrective exercise for optimal outcomes.

Psychomotor (Skill-Based) Objectives

3. Applying/Creating

  • Demonstrate safe and effective dry needling techniques (e.g., pistoning, electrical stimulation) for lower extremity muscles in an acute/subacute athletic population.

  • Design a combined treatment plan integrating dry needling, manual therapy (e.g., joint mobilization, soft tissue work), and corrective exercise (e.g., neuromuscular re-education, strength/control drills).

Affective (Attitude-Based) Objective

4. Evaluating

  • Assess patient response to dry needling and adjust treatment parameters (depth, dosage, adjunct therapies) based on clinical feedback and functional progress.

Optional Advanced Objective

5. Creating/Evaluating

  • Develop a treatment plan for athletes post-dry needling, incorporating objective measures (e.g., strength, mobility, pain monitoring) and sport-specific demands.
